A Brief History
The company was founded in 1872 and has always operated from premises
in Preston, initially in a yard in Deepdale Mill Street and from 1903
onwards at its present six and a half acre site in Wattery Lane, Ashton,
which adjoins the dock development.
With their strategic position opposite the dock estate, the company made full use of the facillitys offered. Many thousands of "Standards" of timber were imported from Russia, Canada, Poland and Scandinavia and hoisted over ships rail onto railway wagons which were then shunted across the main Blackpool Road into the yard.
Between the two world wars, Preston's famous spinning and weaving industry attracted a very large workforce and Page & Taylor were on hand to supply the needs of the building trade to house this influx of labour. During this period the workforce was aided by three horses and four Leyland delivery motors.
On the outbreak of hostilities in 1939 the company embarked on its own war effort and as men were being called up for active service, so the workshops were filled with around fifty women, working day and night shifts to make ammunition/first aid boxes together with other strategic items.
The mid fifties and early seventies saw the boom years in the building trade with Page & Taylor supplying the goods for new houses, schools and hospitals which were being built across the North West.
This investment has resulted in modern timber merchants with a 20,000 sq.ft sales area capable of dealing with both the building and the DIY trade.
Striving to achieve the "Three R's" has always been the companys main
aim. "The right product at the right price, with the right service".
